Billy should optimize his potential

Apparently Billy is unstuck in time, he travels back and forth from moments to moments. But why, why, why! Why doesn't he optimize his potential and change past events. I understand the belief of existentialism, but still why not just try something different and see where it goes?

  1. I dont think he CAN change the past events, he just has to relive them. It would be cool to see how Vonnegut writes the book if this was possible, but what I'm getting from it is that the point of the Tralfamadorians is to teach Billy that fate is unavoidable and that if he tried to change those past events he would end up in the same place.

  2. But maybe Billy doesn't have the power to change the events that he flashes back to because he's really not really stuck in time or traveling through time. Maybe the whole novel isn't really a story, maybe its just a collage and collection of memories. We don't really know what time is because it isn't established. We don't really know when he's looking back because we never get told when.
